Homemade Apple Juice

So my children really love apple juice. I really don’t like how much sugar is in it. So I promised them we would attempt to make homemade apple juice. Of course that promise was all they thought about for each and ever minute from the time I promised on Sunday evening at 8 PM until I broke down and started to play on Monday at 5:30 PM.

I wasn’t ready and I wasn’t going to make it last night. Most recipes I had seen called for cheesecloth and we didn’t have any in the house. So since they would not stop whining and begging and talking about it, I just said fine we will make it work!

So we made homemade apple juice with ZERO added sugar!

I am so excited about this! So Excited!

Homemade Apple Juice

INGREDIENTS:

  • Dutch Oven (or big canning pot)
  • 8 Cups Water
  • 10 Apples (cut in half and cored, remove stems as well)

DIRECTIONS:

In your dutch oven place 8 cups of water (I think I added actually 10), place your cut and cored apples into the water and turn the burner on. I cooked it on high until it came to a boil and then reduced it to a simmer until the water started to get colored. After that we put it into a strainer and let it sit overnight. In the morning the children both had a glass and loved that I made them apple juice!

Well there are a couple things I would do a little different. I would definitely use the cheesecloth next time to drain it. We did have a few bits of apple that were in the juice. But I guess it isn’t that big of a deal in the end. The kids loved it anyway.

I would certainly start a lot earlier! I wasn’t thinking it was going to take as long as it did. But it might also be because I used a lot more water than other recipes I found called for and I did increase the amount of apples but I only used what I had on hand!

I will certainly be making this and putting it in canning jars for later. I will certainly be using drop apples to make this. I will also be adding some YL Cinnamon EO to a bit of a different flavor. I will also be doing double duty and using the apples after all is said and done to make applesauce!
